Benchmarking (Best Practice) Studies

Benchmarking is a process improvement methodology that is unique from others (PDCA, 6 Sigma, LEAN, etc.) in some ways. It begins with a thorough knowledge of the process to be improved, followed by a research phase designed to identify one or more organizations with best practice performance related to the same or similar process that is being improved. A team studies the best practice process and adapts it for use in their own organization. Ironically, when an organization benchmarks with another that is outside its own industry to study a process that is still similar in fundamental ways, (e.g. an Emergency Room Team studies a NASCAR Pit Crew), it leads to the most significant, breakthrough improvements.
